3 Tips for Surviving a Delay at O’Hare International Airport

O’Hare International Airport is one of the biggest, busiest airports in the country. During the holidays, it gets especially busy. If you are traveling through O’Hare this holiday season, plan for the worst. Expect a delay.

In addition to the sheer volume of travelers, the weather is also a factor. Chicago is notoriously cold and snowy during winter, and O’Hare experiences more than a few delays due to weather. It can get so bad that it’s possible for your flight to be grounded due to snow. So what’s a traveler to do to pass the time?

We’re sharing our tips for surviving a delay at O’Hare, one of the busiest airports in the world.

1. Find an airline lounge

If your delay comes at a time when you’re particularly tired, stressed, or needing to get work done, it might be a good idea to look into O’Hare’s airline lounges. An airport lounge is a place that affords comforts you simply can’t find in the terminal. Comfortable seating, quieter conditions, and food and drink options are just some of the perks available with lounge access.

Members of airline clubs can head straight to their corresponding lounge. If you don’t have an airline club membership, many airlines offer day passes. It’s an additional expense, but it may be worth it if you have a long delay or simply want to be comfortable.

If you are a member of an airline club, just find the according lounge.

There are three domestic terminal lounges at O’Hare:

+ American Airlines Admirals Club: Located in Terminal 3, Gate G8; $59 for a one day pass

+ Delta Sky Club: Located in Terminal 2, Gate E6; $59 for a single visit pass

+ United Club: Locations in Terminal 1 Gates B6, B18, and C16, and in Terminal 2, Gate F8; $59 for a one-time pass

2. Get outta there!

If your delay is hours long with no definitive end in sight, it might be best for your sanity to go ahead and leave the airport for a while.

Just make sure you monitor your flight’s status closely with airline apps or text alerts so you can enjoy your sojourn without stressing about being left behind when your flight finally gets on schedule.
