Running a business can be exciting, or maddening, depending on the day of the week, time of day, or just…in general. There are so many highs and lows that sometimes it seems you need to be duct taped to your chair to keep you banging off the walls. At least that’s how it feels in the limousine industry, where nearly everything that happens in the world seems to have a significant effect on our ability to function normally. Corporate transportation or private shuttle buses are equally affected when a crisis thousands of miles away causes fuel prices to jump dramatically, and all clients notice when taxes or fees are added because a city or the state have decided that limo companies are a soft target.
With all this going on, one needs to have the ability to put things in perspective, which is why OML currently works with three not-for-profit organizations, supplying transportation and event planning services to each. The common thread between them is that they all focus on one of life’s greatest gifts…children.
O’Hare-Midway Limousine Service has had a long-standing relationship with The Walter and Connie Payton Foundation. For more than a decade, we have collected toys, school supplies, and miscellaneous items that are distributed around the state to children under the supervision of DCFS. Within the last year, they have added homeless veterans to their cause, and we’ve been able to help there as well, providing free transportation for different events in the area.
The Wood Family Foundation started in started in the summer of 2011, and we were delighted to become partners earlier this year. Their mission is to work with “at risk” kids in Chicago, and we’ve been able to help them by providing transportation support for their fund raising efforts, as well as their baseball clinic.
Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is also new for us. OML will play a support role for any transportation needs or the organization, but most importantly…we’ll be assisting them as they do their work in fulfilling the wishes of children battling cancer.
So why…with all of the pressure on a small business…add three NFP organizations into the mix? The answer is simple really. It’s because we believe in “Paying It Forward”.
The goal of any successful business is to make money. Not just enough to pay the bills, but to be profitable. Ideally, the business should be profitable enough to supply it’s owner with the money to live comfortably. But at the end of the day, you also need to leave a mark, to have left the world a better place than you found it. The people at O’Hare-Midway Limousine Service feel that, by supporting these foundations and participating in acts of kindness, the world could become a better place.
An avalanche begins with a single snowflake, a flood with a single drop of rain, and a journey of a thousand miles with a single step. When it comes to Paying it Forward, it doesn’t take much to get started, but the results can be equally as monumental.
