Nothing seems more counter-intuitive than the COO of a large ground transportation company talking about taking the family car on a road trip. After all, our goal at O’Hare-Midway Limousine Service and OML WORLDWIDE Transportation and Events is to impart the virtues of allowing US to do the driving for YOU. However, after spending several days traversing roughly 3000 miles of America’s roadways, I felt the need to share my expert (albeit unsolicited) opinion.
The reason I like to drive has more to do with my love of our roadways than my fear of flying. I’m sure there are more experienced road warriors, but I have driven to or through at least half of the 48 contiguous states of our union and I am constantly awed by the immense beauty and diversity of our land. Mountains, prairies, lakes, and deserts…miles of pine tree lined highways and palm lined oceans. So many things impossible to appreciate when flying 500 miles per hour at 35,000 feet.
However, each silver cloud comes with a dark lining. It is still amazing to me how many people refuse to abstain from text messaging or emailing while they drive. With all the negative press we are bombarded with relative to the issue, I find it beyond comprehension that there are still drivers that think “that’s not me”. Yet…whenever there is someone on the highway going under the limit, or weaving in and out of their lane, you can almost bet that the person driving if Facebooking their bff. I personally experienced this twice on my ride out of Florida. Ten years ago, you would have assumed a drunk or “impaired” driver. But now, it’s a driver so consumed with TYPING OUT A CONVERSATION so important…so scintillating…that it obviously could not wait until he or she was safely off the road. Nothing can turn a leisurely drive into a harrowing death-race faster than someone driving a shiny metal weapon with no idea as to where it’s headed or at what speed.
I still love the open road, and that probably won’t change any time soon. But I think of the ride as part of the overall experience. To some, the travel part is just a sidebar to the actual trip. For these travelers, O’Hare-Midway Limousine Service and other car service companies provides a valuable service, to or from airports, train stations, and cruise ports. As for business travel, we have been providing safe and reliable corporate transportation for almost 60 years, so it’s obvious we know what we’re doing.
Road trips aren’t for everyone, but if you like to drive and you can handle the random idiot, there is no better way see America.
