The Ups and Downs of Being Up and Down

In an industry as inconsistent as limousine service can be, you become accustomed to peaks and valleys. During the peaks, it always seems like you need a bigger fleet. In the valleys, you wish it was smaller.
Every business experiences busy/slow cycles. Some are fortunate enough for these to be mild and nearly unnoticeable, while in ground transportation the peaks can be tremendously high and valleys can be depressingly low.
The nice thing about the peaks in our business is that everyone is busy…chauffeurs, dispatchers, and reservation personnel are all operating at maximum efficiency. On the other end of the spectrum, the valleys are a time of stress, when there isn’t quite enough business to keep everyone happy.
In Chicago, a new limousine company is born every minute, each trying to establish a foothold by offering NEW CARS at INCREDIBLY LOW RATES. Unfortunately, it’s an illusion. It just isn’t there. In the immortal words of comedian Lewis Black; “When you see something that isn’t there, it’s called a hallucination”. But as long as these types of “shell games” continue, the valleys in our industry will get deeper.
Certain ironies exist for limo services. For instance, there are a few periods of the year where every company is insanely busy. Spring Break is one of those periods, and most companies book up quickly in advance of this seasonal exodus. It becomes a scramble for travelers, who filter their way down the list looking for a company that can accommodate them. The problem here is, by the time you’ve gotten past (and been rebuffed) by the bigger companies, you may experience “service issues”, for the lack of a better word. But customers are willing to put up with poor service, endure old equipment, and look past sub-par insurance to secure a ride to the airport. This is a somewhat risky gamble.
To mitigate the ups and downs, it’s best to stay with what you know. O’Hare-Midway Limousine Service doesn’t have kitschy commercials, promise unbelievable rates, or use well-known “coupon” offerings to attract customers. Instead, we employ a strategy of providing safe, luxury transportation at affordable prices. After 57 years, we’ve learned a thing or two about the ups and downs of limo service in Chicago. We’d be glad to share the upside with you!
